BA’s Best Baking Tool Awards 2022: Pans, Mixers, Spatulas, & More

We often compare baking to science, and just like in a lab, the equipment you use when baking matters a lot. The best baking tools will make everything you bake taste better in a way that’s not necessarily true for other types of cooking. Like it or not, a fancy chef’s knife or titanium skillet won’t stop you from ruining dinner, but the right scale, pan, and mixer can be the difference between absolute perfection and underwhelming muffins, cakes, pies, and cookies.

While we here at Bon Appétit believe choosing the right baking gear is essential, it shouldn’t be scary. We want it to be easy. That’s why we’re introducing our new annual Best Baking Tools Award, highlighting our favorite baking equipment for home cooks of all stripes. For the first time ever, we’ve given these best-in-category products our official stamp of approval.

To make sure we chose right, we worked with dozens of writers and editors and sorted through hundreds of products to identify the tools and appliances that will bring better, easier, and more delicious baked goods to home cooks at all levels in kitchens of all sizes. We use many of these products in our test kitchen; others we turn to at home. Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience under your belt, this is the gear that will help you level up your bakes, both sweet and savory. These are the best baking tools of 2022.

Some rolling pins are made from Italian marble, wrapped around a steel axle with fine mahogany handles. Other rolling pins are pretty much just sticks. We’ll take the stick. Here’s why.

Most of us aren’t making crème brûlée on the daily, but that shouldn’t disqualify anyone from owning a culinary torch. Playing with fire is fun! And the right kitchen torch makes it easy and safe—well, safer. Please exercise caution while looking cool as heck.
